May 2, 1945
Los pacientes del doctor GarcíaMay 2, 1945 marks Berlin’s capitulation and a decisive turn in Adrián Gallardo’s story: when a Soviet tank faced his position on the Wilhelmstrasse, he came out with his hands raised, carrying the papers of Alfonso Navarro. The date closes the city’s last hours of resistance while opening the possibility that Adrián might evade recognition by abandoning his own identity.
The last day of resistance
The surrender follows a final, agonizing delay. On May 1, Soviet forces did not take Berlin in time to celebrate their holiday; the city’s defenders prolonged the resistance for another twenty-four hours. The following day, a Soviet tank advanced along Unter den Linden toward the Brandenburg Gate. From a position at a corner of the Wilhelmstrasse, Adrián and the other occupant of the post watched it approach. When the tank’s gun pointed directly at him, Adrián left the shelter and surrendered.
He did not surrender alone in the sense that mattered most to his future. He carried Alfonso Navarro’s documents, but did not show the occupying soldiers Navarro’s corpse. The choice joined immediate survival to a more calculated transformation: Adrián could pass as the man whose papers he had taken, while the body that might expose the substitution remained hidden.
A new identity, and an unclosed debt
The date’s significance extends beyond the military defeat. Adrián had been at Klooga, and he understood that, sooner or later, he would have to answer for it. The novel places that unresolved responsibility beside his urgent wish to live and to have a future with Agneta Müller. By the time he surrendered, he no longer wanted to die without having loved her; taking Navarro’s identity offered a chance to postpone both death and the reckoning he feared.
The day therefore brings no clean liberation. Berlin’s resistance ends, but Adrián’s survival depends on concealment, and the borrowed papers cannot erase what he did at Klooga. May 2 is both the end of one defense and the beginning of a precarious life under another man’s name.
